I love to ask my thin friends what they eat every day. I actually stalk them, asking for pictures of their every meal.  Sometimes I even stop random strangers at the gym who have a nice fit body and ask “What do you eat every day?” A couple of years ago, I asked the girl who was cutting my hair what she eats.  She told me that she eats a piece of pizza from the pizza place next door for lunch almost every day. I asked her if she eats it slowly? She said “not really”. I asked if one slice really fills her up? She replied “not right away, but I’ve eat one slice of pizza so many times that I know that one slice of pizza will make me full eventually.”

This girl brought up such a good point! Our body actually doesn’t register as being fully until twenty minutes after we eat! This is why it is so important to listen to your body while you eat. For me, this means really slowing down my eating. I eat the way that I do everything else… fast! I have to make a conscious effort to slow down my eating. In my book, I talk about “5 Tips to Slow Down Your Eating”. One thing that has really helped me is before my meal, I will pray that God will help slow me down. I pray this when I thank Him for my food. I will say something like, “Lord, you know that I want to eat really fast. I love to do things fast. I just ask that you would help me to slow down, help me to chew and savor every bite. In your word, you say ‘I am the Lord your God that brought you out of Egypt, open your mouth wide and I will fill it (Ps. 81:10)’. I ask you to fill my heart and mind so I am not ravenous. Help me to feel calm right now and really slow down and put my fork down after each bite.” Try it next time you eat, it really helps!
