Chantel Ray:                 Hey guys, welcome to this week’s episode on Waist Away and I’m so excited for today’s guest. She’s one of America’s leading expert on natural, oral and skincare wellness. She’s the creator and CEO of Primal Life Organics. She’s a registered nurse and I always get this word, you say it, you’re a nurse anesthetist right?

Trina Felber:                 Nurse anesthetist. Yeah.

Chantel Ray:                 Anesthetist.

Trina Felber:                 That’s a tough one.

Chantel Ray:                 And she’s also a best selling author of Beauty’s Dirty Secret. So welcome Trina to the show.

Trina Felber:                 Hi Chantel. Thank you so much for having me. I’m really excited. These are my favorite topics.

Chantel Ray:                 All right. So tell us in your opinion, like if someone said, “Look, I can only pick three things that I could do for my skin to make it amazing.” What would you say are the best products to do?

Trina Felber:                 So, it doesn’t necessarily come down to products, because it’s really about the ingredients in the products. Believe it or not, the ingredients in the products can be causing you to age prematurely. I do a whole webinar on how to read a skincare label to decide if something’s worth your money and your health. And not just your health but because of the ingredients that are put in most skincare products, you’re actually damaging the internal structures of your skin. And there are four reasons that you can age prematurely. And I have found solutions for preventing those or actually just even reversing them for a lot of women and bringing life back to your skin. Because when we were in our teens, our skin looked amazing as babies that got that nice plump skin and then as we get older, it just starts to break down and disintegrate. And unfortunately, the ingredients that are in most skincare products are actually the reason or the cause for it happening faster than it really needs to and there are ways to prevent it.

Chantel Ray:                 So if you had to pick three of the worst ingredients like in a face wash or in a facial cream, what would those ingredients be?

Trina Felber:                 So my first answer is probably going to surprise you, but my number one toxic ingredient that does nothing for your skin and does nothing for your health in skincare is water. That’s number one. And if I told you there was just one ingredient you need to get rid of because the rest kind of follow along with that, I would say ditch the water in your skincare and you will probably … It ultimately gain 10 years in your skin, you will ultimately. And I can go into that a little bit. But that’s primarily the number one ingredient.

Trina Felber:                 The other ingredients follow along as fragrances and a lot of products, including not just facial products but body care products deodorant, full of neurotoxins, cancer causing ingredients, endocrine disruptors, they are allergens, they can cause acne, they can cause skin conditions, and they’re dehydrating your skin which is going to advance your age or advance the look of your age instead of helping you look younger.

Trina Felber:                 And then after that, it’s just a blend of everything else like the parabens and the phthalates, triclosan if you’re talking dental products, artificial colors, artificial ingredients, things like that. Just to ditch you want something that’s natural.

Chantel Ray:                 Wow. Well, your skin is absolutely flawless. But tell me a little bit more about the water, why is having water in the product not good for your skin.

Trina Felber:                 So first off, I’m 51-

Chantel Ray:                 Wow.

Trina Felber:                 Yeah. And my skin looks better today than when I was in my 30s. I started making my own skincare products when I was 39 years old and I had a face full of acne, especially my forehead and all around my jawline and my cheeks. And then I would get really big cystic acne all over my cheeks and the sides. I had really bad acne scars. And my skin just was really dull and looked really bad. In fact, I wouldn’t even go outside of the house to get my mail without putting some sort of makeup on and cover up on. And today I don’t wear much makeup. I started creating my own products based on my nursing knowledge of how to feed the skin, what gets absorbed through the skin, what doesn’t get absorbed through the skin, and how to feed the cells and how to detox the cells because there’s two ways, there’s two pathways inside your body, you’ve got the increase in nutrients, you’ve got the nutrients supply, which is your blood flow but the reverse of that is that the blood flow also has to pull and remove the waste that is created by the cells.

Trina Felber:                 And if you’re not removing the waste, you’re going to get a buildup of bad stuff in your skin that’s just going to come out as acne, it’s going to come out as discoloration, dull, drab skin. So what I did was created a line that is conducive to getting across your barrier. It’s not going to disrupt your membrane or the film on your skin. So you have a natural oil that your body secretes, and it’s called sebum and most people want that to go away. Most people feel like if I have oily skin, that’s a bad thing. In reality, you want this sebum to stay. What’s happening with most products, especially face washes. The first thing you might be doing wrong is you might be washing your face with a product that’s stripping your natural oil.

Trina Felber:                 If you look at your ingredients on your face wash and it has SLS or sodium or sulfate in it, if it has any kind of antibacterial stuff in it, if it has fragrance in it and alcohols in it, you’re stripping away that protective barrier that is actually holding the moisture inside your skin. So when you strip that away, you lose moisture or your skin’s dehydrated, it can’t function as easily it can’t detox as easily. And it’s definitely going to look older because dehydrated skin looks like a prune. It doesn’t look like a plum, and you want your skin to look like a plum. So washing with the right product, and that’s what I did with my face wash. It allows you to wash away your makeup, it washes away what I call the day, but it doesn’t wash away your protective oil.

Trina Felber:                 So most people when they switch to my face wash, they’re amazed at how good their skin feels. And then ultimately how it looks. Because that sebum or that natural oil is staying in place. The other thing that that oil does is it allows the healthy microbiome that lives on your skin, that protects you against acne and rosacea and different skin conditions. That healthy microbiome is also stripped away when you’re using the wrong face washes. So if you can keep that sebum in place and the healthy microbiome on your skin, you’re going to combat aging, you’re also going to combat a lot of skin conditions that you can come up with, or that can result from stripping that away.

Trina Felber:                 So anyway, I don’t know how I got off topic but talking about water and why is water the worst ingredient? So there’s a couple reasons. First of all, most women are interested in keeping their skin looking healthy and young. And when you look at most face products on the market, if you look at the ingredients, the first ingredient is typically water. So the first thing I want you to look at is, is the water purified or is it tap water. And if it doesn’t say it’s purified, which most skincare is not, then it means that it’s loaded with anything that could be in tap water. And when they’ve done the tests on tap water, they have found heavy metals. So if you wonder where heavy metal toxicity can come from, it can actually come from your skincare products. It can have radioactive material, it can have drug waste, bacteria, all sorts of things in water, that can cause an issue on your skin.

Trina Felber:                 The other problem with water when it’s the first ingredient, that means it can be about 75 to 90% water. Here’s what water doesn’t do for your skin. Water doesn’t do anything externally for your skin. It only helps you when you drink it to stay hydrated and helps the cells on the inside. Externally, water doesn’t cross through your skin, it evaporates. When it evaporates, it disrupts that oil on your skin, that sebum and it pulls moisture out of your skin. So what it’s actually doing is causing premature aging, dehydrated skin and premature wrinkling.

Chantel Ray:                 So we got a question in this morning and the person said, “Please, please, please ask these questions.” We had announced that you were coming on the show today. And this is the longest question with the most questions from one person we’ve ever gotten. I’m going to read these to you and you decide which one of these, these may just be too many. So it says, “What are the worst and best foods for acne? What is the best way to reduce inflammation and redness? Does the foods you eat directly affect your acne levels? Is accutane a good option or should people stay away from it? How can somebody identify the root cause of their cystic acne? Can you outgrow acne? What’s the best way to reduce oily skin? What’s the best way to treat scars? Is it good for your skin to get extractions often? Does sunlight benefits cystic acne? Does gut health directly affect your acne levels? And what’s the best way to extract pimples? Can extracting pimples cause more breakouts?”

Chantel Ray:                 So this is basically all about acne and cystic acne right there. Do you feel like your products could help somebody with cystic acne and kind of-

Trina Felber:                 That really is a lot of questions and a lot of information. But what I can come down to is the fact that acne is not unilateral, it’s multifaceted. When I had acne all over my face, it could have been related to diet, it could have been related to hormones, it could be related to stress, it can be related to environmental changes, it can be related to your actual skincare products. The products that are formulated for acne typically contain ingredients that are irritants to your skin, disrupt that microbiome layer, and can actually cause acne. So you have to almost step away from the typical acne treatments because they’re probably actually making your skin condition worse.

Trina Felber:                 I can honestly tell you that most acne programs work to dry the skin out that’s how they work. My skin was drier than you wouldn’t believe but producing so much oil. I literally could wash my face and then use a towel or a tissue about five minutes later blot and it would be loaded with oil. And I started creating my own product. So I do create an acne line. My acne line is called Banished and Beyond it addresses almost every single question regarding skincare that she had. It addresses the fact that acne can be caused by topicals on your skin. So my acne line is formulated to allow your natural oil to replenish itself. What happens internally? Here’s what happens when you’re using products that dry your skin out, this is almost all skincare products by the way, not just acne products.

Trina Felber:                 But when you dry your skin out, your skin does two things, one of two things. It either sends the message, “I’m super dry.” And just literally dehydrates and you feel like your skin is really dry. Your skin shows it’s dry and you’re trying to put more moisture on it but unfortunately you’re putting moisture on it that has water and ingredients that are drying it out more. So you’re really not hydrating your skin from the outside. First of all, anything that can pass through the skin has to be lipid soluble, it has to be an oil. Let me say that again. It has to be an oil. Most water based products do contain some sort of oil. However the amount of oil is so little, that it’s not effective once the water dehydrates your skin. Secondly, once there’s water and oil, you have to have an emulsifier. You’re going to get a lot of these ingredients in here that are not only toxic, but they’re not active, they’re not going to be doing what you need it to do.

Trina Felber:                 So when I formulated my products for acne, I formulated them to actually work so that when you hydrate your skin … So the second thing it does your skin either gets super dry, or your skin does what mine does, my skin said, “Oh my gosh, it’s super dry. Let’s produce more oil.” So your skin is either going to get super dry or it’s going to get supper oily to try and protect you and normalize your skin. And once you stop using the water based products and you start using oil based products, which is super scary to someone who has oily skin, trust me, that was me. Once you start doing that your skin starts to go, “Oh, it’s actually not super dry anymore. I’m getting the oil and the moisture that I need. I don’t need to produce so much.” So it balances out, it pH balances so that your skin can grow the right microbiome and it balances the amount of oil you produce. So that now all day I can go and I don’t have a ton of oil. My skin feels hydrated-

Chantel Ray:                 Your skin looks amazing.

Trina Felber:                 So an oil based program is what you want. When it comes down to diet and acne, there are a lot of triggers and a lot of things. So sugar can cause acne. I had a customer ones who had really bad acne and I explained night shades are a typical cause of acne for a lot of people. So cutting out night shades and elimination diet just might be needed. Cutting out gluten, that can cause acne, dairy products can cause acne. For this one person nuts, she was eating cashews or almonds something every single day, a ton of them, she cut the nuts out and her acne went away. So it’s not just one thing that can cause acne, it’s a multitude of things. But changing your skincare can help heal your skin faster and get rid of anything topical that can be causing acne to get worse and worse and worse over time.

Trina Felber:                 So I’m not sure if I hit all those. My skincare product is called Banished and Beyond. So the banished part of it is the face wash and the toner. And the banished will help set your skin regrow your microbiome and normalize your oil production, and then the beyond part of it is a serum and a moisturizer. And when she talked about acne scars, trust me, I know all about the acne scars. The beyond part of that line is getting beyond the acne. So once the acne starts to heal up, you want to get rid of those scars, you want your skin to look good again. So what I did when I formulated the beyond serum and the beyond moisturizer is that I created it with ingredients that help increase the turnover of your cells, the faster you turn them over, the faster you’re going to get rid of some of the scars, it decreases inflammation internally in the skin, and it also decreases the redness in your skin tone and it’s going to help to even it out.

Trina Felber:                 This doesn’t happen overnight. This can take a little bit of time, there can be an adjustment period but remember it’s multifaceted. When it comes to digestive health, yes, acne is also tied to digestive health. You want to make sure that you’re taking probiotics or that you have a good digestive system in place. If your immune system isn’t super strong, that’s a really good indicator that your digestive center is not strong as well. So you might want to get some digestive testing or things like that done. But yes, your gut health is extremely important in keeping not just your skin healthy and free from acne, but your whole body healthy.

Chantel Ray:                 Okay, so one of the other questions they asked was, is it good for your skin to get extractions often? And what is the best way to extract pimples? And can extracting pimples cause more breakouts?

Trina Felber:                 That is something more on … I don’t necessarily do like extractions, I do more of the topical treatment to help re-establish a healthy microbiome. Extractions are not necessarily the best thing for your skin they can cause irritation. What I usually tell people I have it’s called Banished Blemish Serum, is a topical treatment that I actually created by accident. So it’s really kind of a funny story. So one night … So I made this serum, it was a muscle serum, and the serum had cayenne pepper in it and it had menthol in it to help increase blood flow to your muscles and help reduce inflammation. And one night I was going to bed and I had this big, huge cystic juicy zit growing on the corner of my chin. And I thought, “Hmm, I wonder what cayenne pepper does to a zit.”

Trina Felber:                 So I took a little bit of that and I put it on my zit. And I went to bed and the first time, this is the first time in my 40 years of life, or 39, whatever it was, that I actually put something on a zit and felt like it was doing something. I was like, “Oh my gosh, it feels like it’s tingling, it’s burning. It actually feels like it’s burning that zit out.” I got up the next morning expected to have this big, huge nasty thing growing on the side of my face and I literally walked by the bathroom mirror and had to stop. And I actually had to feel for where that zit was. It was almost gone. And I thought, “Wow, that’s what cayenne pepper does, to a zit.”

Trina Felber:                 So I had to reverse engineer what happened there. So cayenne pepper does the same thing for your skin that it does when you eat it. It causes heat. Anytime there’s increased heat, there’s increase in blood flow. Anytime there’s increase in blood flow, you have a better reduction of inflammation, reduction of the detox or the toxins in there and you can increase the nutrient delivery. So what I did was created a Banish Blemish Serum with an olive oil base, which is really good for the skin. It absorbs very quickly. Cayenne pepper, increasing the blood flow. And then I put essential oils in there that are going to target the bacteria that’s causing an issue and it’s going to increase the blood flow, decrease inflammation very quickly and speed healing so that almost overnight you can go from a big juicy zit to a where is it going, is it going away type of thing.

Trina Felber:                 When you do that and you feed it with oil … I remember when I would get acne and I would put those topicals on it and it would dry out and I’d try and put makeup on and the makeup would just get really crusty and like fall off the zit and it was really gross. What happens when you feed your skin what it wants which is oil, you don’t get that dried out sensation or feeling most of the time. Sometimes it happens just because of what’s inside the what’s it’s cleaning out. But for the most part, it doesn’t dry out and so it heals super quick. That’s what happens when you feed your skin the right thing. It can heal very quickly. So a lot of times that’s what happens and you don’t necessarily get that dried out sensation of a zit that last for a week you only have it for maybe two or three days.

Chantel Ray:                 So I see a couple products behind you. I’d love for you to just show us a couple of them before we finish the questions out. I’d love to have you read some of the ingredients that are in those products would you mind?

Trina Felber:                 Yeah, no. So I have a couple of my products with me. So first off, I can give you the ingredients in my face wash because I did talk about that.

Chantel Ray:                 Okay.

Trina Felber:                 So most face wash has water in it and it has sodium lauryl sulfate or some sort of … Something that’s going to foam a foaming agent, and a lot of times has fragrance in it, alcohols in it, things like that. Mine is all saponified oil. So mine will still foam, but it’s not going to strip your natural oil and it’s not like an oil cleanse. So a lot of people do oil cleansing. A lot of people love it, a lot of people don’t like it. But this is very similar to an oil cleanse, but it’s different in the fact that it’s more like a face wash. So the cleanser has saponified oils of coconut, olive oil, jojoba oil, Rosemary extract, and aloe leaf juice, and then my Earth formula, all of my … I have three different face washes, the banished has that. And then the actual ingredients that are added to that are a little bit different for each one of them. But for instance, my Earth formula has Kaolin clay, French green clay, grapefruit peel, honey powder, and lavender.

Trina Felber:                 And so what happens when you wash with my face wash all of them have a clay in it. Clay is really neutralizing and normalizing for the skin. But the other thing it does is, because it has a negative charge and toxins have a positive charge, it can actually bind to toxins not just in your skin and pull them out of your skin tissue but in your pores. It can help pull and deep cleanse in your pores, but remember it’s not going to be disrupting that oil base. The other beauty tool that I have which is super cool that I use along with my face wash is called my quiver. So this is a sonic I can turn it on you can probably hear the vibration there. It uses sonic vibration. I use this every morning. So when you look at my skin and go, “She doesn’t look 51,” I have a do it yourself natural facelift kit. This is part of it. I teach you how to use this little tool for two to three minutes every single day and create your own facelift.

Trina Felber:                 It’s going to target the four reasons, the four root causes of premature aging along with the products that I supply. It’s all targeted at the four root causes of premature or just aging in general, it doesn’t have to be premature aging, but the reasons that your skin start to look older and not plump and full and hydrated and lifted. So what this also does, the sonic vibration, when you wash with it, it actually opens your pore up and when you’re washing with the clay, the clay can bind to you and deep cleanse deep into your pores. So it’s really kind of cool. The other products that I have, this is my blue berry face serum. I have a coffee bean face serum as well I can read the ingredients on the coffee.

Trina Felber:                 If you get yourself a facelift kit the coffee bean face serum, the blueberry serum come with it. This is the morning serum, this is your nighttime serum. You get the earth face wash, you also get the quiver. And then you also get a really cool, let me see if I have it here, Sweet Revenge exfoliator because you want to exfoliate your skin about once a week. Super easy, super gentle.

Trina Felber:                 But my coffee being face serum has argon oil, it has coffee, it’s actually a green coffee seed oil and then it has gelatin in it which is good for your skin to keep the collagen levels up in your skin. So the coffee bean has a little bit of caffeine in it, and a ton of antioxidants. So that’s why coffee beans really good for your skin and what it does. What’s interesting is, the reason I love this not just because it’s coffee for the morning, but when you smell coffee, coffee does the opposite of what you think it would do for your brain. It actually calms your brain down. So if you put this on before you actually drink your coffee, you’ll actually calm your brainwaves before you jack them up with caffeine internally. But the caffeine in here for your skin actually helps to tone your skin. And when I say tighten I don’t mean dry. I mean just tone it and tighten it so that it looks like it did when you were in your teens. It doesn’t like fall flappy down.

Trina Felber:                 So those are the ingredients no water, no artificial ingredients. Trina Felber:                 But the blueberry face serum is the one that’s I call it my vitamin C face serum, different than your typical vitamin C face serum because this doesn’t use ascorbic acid. Ascorbic acid is the primary vitamin C form that’s used in face washes or face serums. And the problem is, there’s a couple problems with it. First of all, its water soluble, not oil soluble, which means that it has to be blended in water and then it has to be mixed with something so that it can penetrate into your skin. So they typically mix it with a chemical, it’s a palmitate. And palmitate, actually, when you look it up, causes cell death. So you’re actually buying a vitamin C formula that you want to reverse aging and improve yourselves, that is mixed with something that causes cell death. I thought that was absolutely awful and I figured there’s a better way to do this. The other problem is its water soluble, and as soon as you expose ascorbic acid to air, it starts to oxidize and breakdown.

Trina Felber:                 So by the time you get to the middle or end of your bottle, for the most part, you’re not really getting any vitamin C anyway, that’s effective for you. Part of that is in the course that I teach as well is how to decipher which ingredients are the key ingredients, and is there enough of those key ingredients in the product so that you know that you’re buying it and you’re going to get the effect from that product. So my blueberry face serum, and this is a long one, so I won’t go into every single one of them. But what I want you to understand is that about an every product of mine, almost every product that has an oil based or earth based ingredient is organic.

Trina Felber:                 Part of my class I teach you how to find the hidden toxins in skincare. And one of the hidden toxins besides water is non-organic ingredients. They look healthy on the bottle when you see jojoba oil, but if it’s not organic, it’s grown with herbicides, pesticides, fertilizers, and can be a GMO product. So, there are hidden toxins, those toxins are not processed out. If they were processed out, there would be no difference between certified organic and non-organically grown products, just like the food that you eat. So those are the hidden toxins. So my standard for my skincare is at least 95% of the oils, essential oils, herbs extracts have to be certified organic or wild crafted. And most of my skincare line is 100% certified organic. So that’s-

Chantel Ray:                 Now where do you make these products at? Do you have a distributor?

Trina Felber:                 So we have our own kitchen, I have a facility, we have our own kitchen, and we make all of our own skincare products.

Chantel Ray:                 Wow, that’s amazing. And where do you live?

Trina Felber:                 I’m in Ohio. I’m just south of Cleveland. So we’re about half hour south of Cleveland in Akron, Ohio.

Chantel Ray:                 Wow, that’s amazing. So tell me as far as the last question he had asked that I’m not sure that we totally answered. He said, “What’s the best way to reduce oily skin?” And I think you answered that by saying you really reduce oily skin by adding oil is that right?

Trina Felber:                 Yep. First of all get rid of water. If anybody goes home today, your biggest takeaway is to look at your products, especially the products that you use all the time and I’m talking about your face washes, your face serums, your face moisturizers, your body moisturizers, even your deodorant, and even your toothpaste like looking at all your skincare products. The problem necessarily isn’t … If you’ve got one product that’s got water in it, that’s probably not going to be an issue. The problem is that every product has water in it as the base because it’s cheap, and it’s like easy to get. It doesn’t cost any money for them to put water in a product. So they’re going to water a product down by 90% instead of giving you a full bottle of what you really need for your skin, so it’s just drying your skin out. So the best way to get rid of or combat oily skin is to ditch the water and replace it with an oil based program. And don’t be afraid because honestly it’s the best thing you can do for your skin.

Trina Felber:                 Back in the day, Mother Nature had it right. Back in the day, they didn’t have all those other toxic ingredients and things like that. They just put oils on their skin and in their body and that’s what you use … First of all you use a lot less. That’s the one thing that most people make … The biggest mistake they make when they start my skincare line is they use too much and they say, “Oh my face feels really oily after I use it.” Well it’s because you put too much on. Oil is going to absorb into your skin within about 10 minutes. So when you put the serum on your face, if your skin feels too slick or oily, like it’s still sitting on top. You’ve just applied too much, just the next time apply less you can blot some of that off, but you just need such a little amount. Almost to the point when you rub it in, you don’t feel that oiliness, you want that little and it’s very effective because it crosses through your skin.

Chantel Ray:                 Now a lot of natural night creams and stuff that I’ve seen almost all of them contain like coconut oil, Shea butter, essential oils, I hear you talking a lot about serum. Do you guys carry a night cream? And if so, what are the ingredients in that?

Trina Felber:                 So yeah, let me see if I have it around. I do have moisturizer. So my moisturizer I have the Beyond Face Moisturizer and I have a Bare Face Moisturizer. And my moisturizers contain oils, wax, beeswax. Don’t be afraid of beeswax, beeswax is really, really good for the skin. And then it has essential oils. The bear doesn’t have essential oils. The bear is almost my starting line for … It’s great for teens. My bare face products are great for teens but it’s also a good starting line for people that just want to experiment. But I do have some coconut oil. I don’t really put Shea butter in any of my face products primarily because I think it’s a really heavy oil. You want to stay away from petroleum and mineral oils in your face products as well. Those can clog the pores. I use a lot of like almond oil, jojoba oil, avocado oil, I even use emu oil in my skin because emo is really good fat for the skin.

Trina Felber:                 So a lot of different oils. I blend a lot of essential oils in with mine because the essential oils target the internal structures of your skin. They’re going to support the internal structures, the cells and the structures inside your skin to help increase the collagen and elastin production. When I talk about four root causes of your skin looking older than it really should be, the causes are dehydration, which is typically caused by water from your skincare products. And the other ingredients that go along with that like fragrance, SLS, other toxic ingredients that are water based ingredients. The other is your muscle atrophy.

Trina Felber:                 As we get older, if you think about when you work out and you’ve got great muscles, and then you stop working out and you start to atrophy, and it doesn’t necessarily take that long. The same thing happens on your facial. If you took off all your skin, you’ve got facial muscles that you don’t necessarily work out. There are actual facial muscle exercises you can be doing every day, but most of us don’t do them. So the facial muscles actually start to atrophy and that can cause you to have that sunken in look and then your skin starts to droop. Chantel Ray:                 All right, this next one’s from Maria in Cincinnati, “I’ve suffered from psoriasis for about five years. I hate it and I’m always embarrassed by how my skin looks. Do you know of any specific products that could target psoriasis?”

Trina Felber:                 So psoriasis is also very similar to acne. Whenever you’re talking about skin conditions, you want to look at your digestive health. Believe it or not, psoriasis can also be caused by your immune system and your digestive health so just definitely making sure your digestive health is good. Also-

Chantel Ray:                 Let’s stay there for just a second. So if you had to pick, everyone’s different. Like you said, one girl took out cashews but if you had to say, okay, let’s talk about for your skin specifically, what would you say are your top five major triggers that people might need to say, “Let me eliminate this for a week and see what happens.” And the other question is, are you talking about eliminating for a week? Are we saying eliminate for two weeks, a month? What are you seeing specifically for skin?

Trina Felber:                 Well, it’s not an easy process. So when you talk about an elimination diet, you’re talking about a long process of eliminating certain things, waiting two or three weeks to see if your skin heels, adding something back in, seeing what the reaction is. So everybody sort of does it different. I think probably if you really want to target something, I can tell you the things that trigger skin conditions as far as food goes, would be dairy. So I would cut out all dairy and go with coconut creamer, go with coconut milk, almond milk, things like that.

Trina Felber:                 The AIP protocol, the autoimmune protocol is a really good dietary protocol when you’re talking about skin conditions, it’s going to help get rid of anything that can cause histamine release which is then going to cause the inflammation and then can come out, every disease starts is inflammation. I talk about this when I talk about oral wellness and dental health. If you have a good microbiome and good healthy gum tissue, that’s an indication that everything else inside your body is actually healthy. When you have bleeding gums and gingivitis and cavities and bad breath that’s an indication that everything else inside your body can is having problems. The number one way inflammation gets in your body is through your mouth and your gum tissue. And every disease, it doesn’t matter if it’s diabetes, it doesn’t matter if it’s skin conditions, it starts with some sort of inflammatory process, whether that’s related to food, whether it’s related to stress, bacteria, whatever, it’s all an inflammatory, so it’s not an easy answer.

Trina Felber:                 These are the foods that cause inflammatory processes just start and they also cause issues with your mouth, starting inside your mouth. So dairy products, nuts, for some people nuts, especially cashews. I know are big ones that can cause issues. A lot of people almonds are okay, but it’s just kind of wiping out nuts. You’re going to go on almost a very strict diet of eating fruits, vegetable, you’re going to basically go on like a real food diet. But you also want to cut out probably some night shades like peppers and tomatoes and things like that, because those can actually cause skin conditions as well or the inflammation. Sugar, and gluten, five things, and it’s a lot because a lot of them are more than one ingredient or product. But getting rid of the artificial stuff, the processed foods, the gluten, that stuff can help. If you really want to go on a road to wellness and healing, that’s not just going to get rid of skin conditions that’s actually going to heal your whole body.

Chantel Ray:                 Well, now that you’re talking about bad breath, I’m going to jump into this question from someone that’s anonymous. That is hysterical. It says, “My breath has been so bad lately and I heard on your podcast about mama z, doing the oil pulling. I’ve been trying to take a tablespoon of coconut oil every day and swishing it in my mouth for only 10 minutes a day. I know she said 20 to 30 minutes on the show but will 10 minutes work?” I don’t know why I’m reading question mark. “Is there anything else for bad breath. My boyfriend says my breath smells so bad. Help before I need to find a new man.” Anonymous.

Trina Felber:                 [inaudible 00:43:02] anonymous. Okay, so I’ve got a lot of information. This is actually a whole nother episode. This is like a 45 minute talk that I do about oral wellness. So first of all, oil pulling is good. I actually have a better solution, the pain point. So the reason that I came up with a better solution is not because oil pulling isn’t effective or isn’t good, it’s because most people won’t do 20 minutes, just like she said, “20 minutes, I can’t do it. 10 minutes is that effective?” Honestly, when you look at everybody that’s suggesting and all the research, 20 minutes is what you need for oil pulling, it’s going to help to clean your tissues of your mouth. Here’s the key, if you’re brushing with the wrong products, you might as well not even oil pull, I’m just going to be completely honest and put that out there because you’re destroying the whole reason you’re oil pulling.

Trina Felber:                 When you’re brushing your teeth I call it toxic paste when you’re brushing your teeth with a commercial toothpaste and I’m talking about the brand names out there, but I’m also talking about some natural products. When I teach you how to clean your mouth, it’s really simple. It’s really easy and you will be surprised at how quickly your mouth turns around. The first sign that you have an imbalance in the good bacteria inside your mouth and the bad bacteria inside your mouth is bad breath and the worst your breath, the worst the bad bacteria. If you have bad bacteria inside your mouth, you are at risk for gum disease you are at risk for cavities and you are at risk for heart disease, diabetes, every internal inflammation including low birth weight babies that has been fertility issues that’s all been correlated to oral health.

Trina Felber:                 So when I talk about oral health, it’s a huge topic. But what I can tell you is what I did, what I came up with, to get rid of that 20 minute pain point of swishing your mouth with coconut oil is my tooth powder. I actually have a 21 day oral detox program. And in 21 days, you get a two months supply. But in 21 days, you can cleanse your oral tissues, regrow your good microbiome. The problem with the commercial products that we’re using in dental health, is that it’s the … Just like skincare, we buy products that say “Kills 99% of bacteria.” Right? You know which ones I’m talking about? Mouthwashes, toothpaste, kills 99% of bacteria. We have been brainwashed into believing that bacteria is bad. So we want to kill 99%.

Trina Felber:                 The problem is about 50% is actually healthy bacteria. So you don’t want to kill 90% or 99% you want to kill only the bad stuff. So the good stuff inside your mouth lives in the opposite environment as the bad stuff. So the good bacteria inside your mouth lives in an alkaline environment, it grows in alkaline environment, it creates an alkaline environment. When you have an alkaline environment inside your mouth, your saliva, it’s the body secretion no one’s talking about, saliva can actually protect you for 24 hours a day. If you are not making good healthy amounts of saliva, then that is an indication that you have issues internally as well. So the other thing that you want is, the alkaline environment will help put the minerals back in your teeth, they’re going to keep your teeth strong, healthy and keep your gums healthy as well.

Trina Felber:                 So what I did was created my 21 day oral detox it starts with a tooth powder so you get to two tooth powder you get a white formula in the morning and a black formula for the evening, you get a tongue scraper to scrape that bacteria off your tongue, it’s going to clean your tongue off. And then you get a gum serum as well as a toothbrush that has activated charcoal right in the bristles to detox your teeth and your gum tissue. But the cleansing with clay does the exact same thing that oil pulling does, but it does it in a lot less time. So if you brush for two minutes with my dirty mouth tooth powder or my toothpaste, you can actually get the same effects and even better than oil pulling for 20 minutes. And here’s why.

Trina Felber:                 Clay is alkalizing, is going to alkalize your mouth. It has the minerals in it. So while it’s alkalizing your mouth, it’s going to help to put the minerals back in your teeth so your teeth are going to be stronger, your sensitivities are going to go away, you’re going to be less prone to cavities. And then it also has the effect that it’s going to increase blood flow to your gum tissues. So your gum tissue is going to be healthier, but clay like I was talking on your skin and pulling toxins out of your tissue, clay is going to bind to the toxins in your gums as well and help pull and detox the tissues of your gums. Two minutes of brushing with dirty mouth tooth powder is going to do the same thing. But it’s actually going to do more because it’s going to increase the wellness not just of your gum tissue but of your teeth, and help your saliva protect you for 24 hours.

Chantel Ray:                 Okay, this next one’s from Keyshia, in Memphis. “My mom always said that eating too much chocolate will give me zits. Is that really true that certain foods can make you break out? Should I avoid certain foods to keep my skin clear?” I think we’ve kind of already answered that one.

Trina Felber:                 Yeah, and chocolate, it’s the sugar. So like if you’re using a dot chocolate it might not be as reactive, everybody’s different. So if your skin seems to get … And it’s usually about two to three days after you eat something, so most people aren’t like thinking, “Oh, I got a zit. What did I eat three days ago?” So for me when I eat sugar, my armpits stink like crazy for like three days later.

Chantel Ray:                 Well, this is our next question. This is from Jacob in Montreal. He says, “I’ve tried a couple of organic deodorants, but I get really sweaty when I work out and always end up stinking. Are there any deodorants that are still natural or organic, but actually work?”

Trina Felber:                 Yeah, so as a nurse, I created all of my products to do what you want them to do, but I put nursing care in them so they’re actually doing something internally in your body so that your body functions better. So my deodorant is called, let me grab one.

Chantel Ray:                 Yeah.

Trina Felber:                 It’s called the Stick Up Natural Deodorant. It’s in cardboard, so it’s ditching the plastic and it’s made with … It’s got a couple different things. So the first thing you’re going to notice it’s got … This one’s the black, I think it’s black lavender or black [inaudible 00:49:54]. It’s got activated charcoal in this one. What I did with all my deodorants is it goes on with colors. So anybody that’s watching can see. So my whites will go on white, my black deodorants which have activated charcoal go on lavender and then I have a green matcha that goes on green. And I did that on purpose. As a nurse, I know that you have lymph nodes in your armpits. And if you don’t massage your lymph nodes, your trash sits there, that trash is going to clog up your pores, it’s going to make you stickier and it’s actually going to make you less healthy internally.

Trina Felber:                 So what I did was created it with a little bit of colors. So you put about two to three swipes on and you just massage it until the color goes away. So what you’re doing when you massage it, so the color is basically gone, what you’re doing is massaging your lymph nodes and taking out your trash. The other thing that happens when you’re massaging your armpits is that you’re breaking up the tissue and toxins are being released. Just like when you get a massage, toxins are being released from the tissues themselves. If you don’t do something to get rid of those toxins they just sit there and accumulate. So I added clay, same reason I added clay to my toothpaste and my tooth powder and the same reason it’s in my skincare. It’s going to absorb and detox your tissue.

Trina Felber:                 The cleaner your tissue, the less you will sweat, the less you will stink. The other thing I did was got rid of the baking soda. There’s no baking soda in here. Most natural deodorants use baking soda so that it can change the pH and kill the bacteria that causes odor. The problem is the change in pH causes a bad rash under the armpit. It does nothing internally for you. It’s the change of pH, it actually causes a burn. So what I added was magnesium and zinc oxide. Magnesium is one of the best ways to get magnesium in your body. And we’re all deficient in magnesium, is topically. So on the outside magnesium is going to help kill the bacteria but it’s not going to change the pH it’s gentle on your skin you’re actually going to absorb it.

Trina Felber:                 Internally, one of the things that magnesium does is it helps you deodorize more efficiently so that you can actually stink less and even sweat less. So over time, when you use my stick up deodorant, you actually will sweat a little bit less and stink less because the more you use it, the cleaner your tissues are, and the cleaner you’re sweating is going to be. You may still have a little bit of an odor every once in a while depending on diet, depending on stress, depending on hormones, all of those things come into play. But for most people, they can apply it once every day and some people once they use it for a while can do it every two days and they really effectively sweat less. It’s not an antiperspirant, it’s not going to stop you from sweating. You do want to sweat to get those toxins out. It has been researched, BPA that’s found in plastic, you get higher levels in your sweat of BPA and other phthalates you sweat them out more than your urine gets rid of those.

Trina Felber:                 So you do want to sweat. You just don’t want to stink and sweat profusely. So by using my stick up natural deodorant, over time it’s going to just keep your tissue super clean. The cleaner your lymph is especially for women, your breast tissue will be healthier, and your whole body is going to be healthier if you’re taking your trash out every day.

Chantel Ray:                 Well, I want you to talk a little bit more about that rash because my husband, and it’s funny that you said that, I had bought just some organic deodorant and I don’t even remember what it was but it was an organic natural deodorant. I finally got him on board with switching to an organic and then I had bought one brand it was fine. I bought him another brand and then he had said, “Chantel this new brand you got me has given me kind of a rash right here.” And so I switched back to the other brand. So you are saying the reason for that rash is probably what?

Trina Felber:                 It’s the baking soda most likely. Sometimes you’re just sensitive to some of the essential oils that are unnatural. But here’s what happens, and it’s only because I manufactured this stuff that I know this and I used to make a deodorant that had baking soda in it. So here’s the problem with baking soda. Baking soda is extremely heavy. And this is a wet pour. When I call it a wet pour, it means everything’s melted, and we pour it into the container wet. Baking soda, this takes a little bit of time to cool. Baking Soda starts to settle to the bottom during the cooling process. And so when you start with a natural deodorant that has baking soda in it, you might be okay for the first third of the container. But as soon as you start getting down you’re going to get an increased amount of baking soda, which means the pH is going to be altered even more. So the further down you get, the higher the concentration of baking soda, the more of the possibility of breaking out in a rash.

Trina Felber:                 The other problem is that some companies put so much baking soda in there because they think a little is good and more is better but really, it’s not. Baking soda is not really the most effective thing to use under your armpit. If a rash happens, put a little bit of coconut oil under your armpit just enough that you massage it in and it’s nice and dry. It’s not wet and sticky feeling till it heals up and then switch to something like my stick up deodorant that is baking soda free, you don’t need the baking soda. This is very effective with arrowroot powder, bentonite clay, this one has charcoal added to increase the detoxification and decrease the wet feeling and it’s really effective. And like I said, the longer you use mine, the more effective it becomes. The key is-

Chantel Ray:                 I can’t wait to try it.

Trina Felber:                 -massaging it in.

Chantel Ray:                 Now, take me through a day in the life of Trina. I always ask all of our guests, what did you eat yesterday? When do you eat it? And do you have particular foods that you say, “Listen for me personally these are kind of out and I really focus on these.”

Trina Felber:                 I am probably one of the healthiest people that you’ll meet. My diet is probably as paleo as you can get. So I ditch all sugar. I rarely eat sugar. Occasionally I’ll have a piece of birthday cake. But for the most part on a daily basis, I get up I will have my vitamin mix that I mix in water, and I’ll put some digestive enzymes and things like that in there. I’m on a gut wellness path right now. And then I make a coconut milk, protein powder, smoothie or drink. I don’t really add a lot to it, I’m a very bland person though. The less you eat sugar, the less you need things that have that really sparky taste to it.

Chantel Ray:                 What kind of protein powder do you use?

Trina Felber:                 I have a couple different brands that I use, but right now I’m using Dr. Amy Myers, the Paleo Way, her protein powders very good. So I’ve been using that one.

Chantel Ray:                 And then you just mix it with coconut milk?

Trina Felber:                 I mix it with coconut milk and sometimes I put a scoop of activated charcoal in there. Activated charcoal is really good at detoxing the body and getting rid of extra bloating and gassiness. And then for lunch I’m very … Right now I eat a lot of like, it’s all clean meat but I eat a lot of chicken and red meat for healing for my body and then fruits and vegetables, not even fruits. I barely eat fruit, mostly vegetables is what I eat. So for dinner last night I actually made bone broth chicken soup and it just had bone broth. It had some chicken in it and celery, onions and carrots. And that was my dinner. And then today for lunch honestly I just brought … I found lunch meat that doesn’t have any sugar in it. Believe it or not most lunch meat has sugar in it. So it’s an oven roasted turkey lunch meat that I just have shredded and that’s basically what I eat for my lunch.

Chantel Ray:                 So you don’t need any grains then at all?

Trina Felber:                 Not right now, occasionally, just because I’m on a digestive wellness and grains are not good. I don’t eat gluten. So if I do eat something it’s going to be a grain free it’s going to be like [inaudible 00:58:17] or something like that. I try not to eat gluten occasionally I’ll have something but for the most part, I’m very, very clean in my diet.

Chantel Ray:                 Awesome. This question is from Maria Carolina Gomez Otera Aguirra. My gosh. That’s the longest name ever. I don’t know if Maria Carolina is her name, but that is her full name from Arlington. Maria Carolina Gomez Otera Aguirra from Arlington, “I would like to know more about paleo. Is there any books that you suggest?” So for you just talk a little bit more about what paleo foods you like to eat and then talk about any books you like on that topic.

Trina Felber:                 Oh, gosh, it’s been a while since I’ve done like, we started paleo back probably eight years ago. And like, balanced bites, there’s just a bunch of different paleo recipe books. And you can find so much on the web. Dr. Sarah Ballantyne has some great recipes that are paleo and autoimmune.

Chantel Ray:                 She was just on our show.

Trina Felber:                 Oh she was? I love Sarah. Oh my gosh. She is a great friend.

Chantel Ray:                 She is great.

Trina Felber:                 Yeah, so she’s a great resource. Dr. Amy Myers is a great resource, Liz Wolfe is a good friend and she’s a great resource, Real Food Liz is a great resource. I’ve been eating paleo for so long that it’s just like a nature to me. I don’t know any other way of eating and living. So for me it’s clean, clean, clean. And by clean I also mean like very little sauce like I try to eat chicken breasts with just olive oil and some seasoning on it. My steaks are the same way, olive oil or coconut oil with seasoning on it. I stay away from most sauces, I stay away from baked potatoes like white potatoes, I’ll eat some, like the sweet potatoes are good, clean vegetables, like putting a grass fed butter on them is great. But just eating lots of vegetables.

Trina Felber:                 I stay away from fruit for myself just because of the sugar in it isn’t compatible right now with my gut. And I’m just trying to heal that. So basically that’s it. It’s clean, it’s easy and it’s shopping the grocery store on the aisles like not down the aisles but around the border for the most part.

Chantel Ray:                 What would be if you had to say like, here’s my top three lunches or top three dinners like every week you’ll see me eating x for lunch or every week you’ll see me eating what for dinner. What are kind of some of those lunches and dinners for you?

Trina Felber:                 Again, it’s just a clean meat. So my oven roasted turkey breast, sometimes I have just my bone broth soup and I’ll usually try and eat some red meat. So even a hamburger or a steak once a week, is usually once or twice a week is what I try to have. I eat lots of salads too. So when I eat out, I usually get a salad but what I usually do is bring olive oil, I don’t eat dressing. All I put is olive oil or avocado oil in my salad. That’s my dressing. It tastes so good and it’s super clean and you can buy little packets so that you can travel and it’s really easy.

Trina Felber:                 I sort of pack it in and I have a couple of packets in my purse so that when we go out to dinner, I just order a salad with the clean ingredients that I want and then I put my oil on it and eat it super easy, but it’s just becoming aware of what works with your body. And the more you live without artificial … I have a Facebook group that it’s called the natural skincare group. But really what we focus on is how to stay natural in an artificial world because so much out there is artificial and it’s really hard to stay natural. And not that all artificial is bad, but making sure that you’re sticking to as natural as possible.

Chantel Ray:                 You know which salad dressing I love is, there’s a, this called Tessemae, T-E-S-S-E-M-A-E and they have some really good ones and most of them are just some kind of organic oil, either avocado oil or sunflower oil and then some kind of like balsamic vinegar, and like mustard or mustard seeds, salt, spices, poppy seeds, onion powder, black pepper, and they’re all organic. They’re all dairy free, they’re gluten free and their ingredients are clean as can be. So I love these salad dressings, those are really good.

Trina Felber:                 Yeah, those are good. I just know for me sticking with straight olive oil-

Chantel Ray:                 Works.

The three different clays are bentonite, white kaolin and French green and they’re really great for your gum tissue as well as remineralizing your teeth. That’s the difference. And then baking soda is going to make it more alkaline. So it’s going to keep your mouth alkaline so that those three can actually work synergistically with your teeth to get the minerals back in. It’s also going to make it more so that your saliva is more effective for the 24 hours that your saliva is supposed to be protecting you against the bacteria that causes gingivits.
